In the story “Everyday
Use” Maggie is a daughter and a sister with many unconscious conflicts that are
known as, psychoanalytic theory. Maggie is embarrassed of the burn scars on her
arm. Also the fact that she says “I am
a large, big boned woman with rough, man.working hands. I am a large, big boned
woman with rough, man.working hands”. It is easy for the reader to see that she
is insecure about herself. She has a low self-esteem. Maggie says she has the
desire to look like her beautiful, successful sister.
Another character
affected by these unconscious conflicts is Maggie’s sister, Dee. She shows
tendencies of denial. She made up stories to her mother and sister about a nice
life she was living to avoid the reminder of how she grew up. She also shows
Avoidance in the sense that she was trying to run from who she was to be her
own person. She had a problem with being named after her unsuccessful aunt
fearing that she too would be unsuccessful. So, she changed her name to Wangero
Leewanika Kemanjo. Dee shows to be insecure for this same reason because she
tries to change herself to find her own identity.
